Wavelets are rather interesting as transforms. They subdivide a frame into a quarter-resolution image, and 3 more quarter-resolution images as residuals. Unlike DCTs, they are highly localized, which means they can be performed individually on each slice, yet when assembled they function as if the entire frame was transformed.
