Quicksort is striking in its simplicity and elegance. It is based on the idea that a straightforward linear-time solution exists for a more limited form of the sorting problem, which Hoare dubbed “partitioning” the array: reorganize it so that smaller values appear first, followed by larger values. If we can do this, we have not sorted the array yet, but we have made a big step, since the two slices of the partition are, each taken globally, at their definitive place in the future sorted array. And they are each smaller than the original! So all we have to do is to repeat the process until we get slices that are of size 1 (or zero) and the array will be sorted.
